Application Developer (remote)

Job Description

DataCite is looking for a Full Stack Application Developer to join the DataCite development team in a fully remote position. You will be involved in furthering the technology in our services that support our mission.

We are a global community that share a common interest: to ensure that research outputs and resources are openly available and connected so that their reuse can advance knowledge across and between disciplines, now and in the future.

As a community, we make research more effective with metadata that connects research outputs and resources–from samples and images to data and preprints. We enable the creation and management of persistent identifiers (PIDs), integrate services to improve research workflows, and facilitate the discovery and reuse of research outputs and resources.

Working at DataCite

We are a fully remote team, this means we don't have a physical office, we work where it's most comfortable. The team is distributed across several European countries, Japan, Canada, and the United States, supporting a global community of organizational members across 48 countries.

The DataCite development team has built and maintains the software that is running DataCite services, and our codebase has been made openly available under a permissive open source license. The languages, frameworks, and tools the team is using are constantly evolving, adjusting to the needs of DataCite members, and evolving community practices.

Responsibilities and duties

  • Develop full-stack product features in an open source software environment, including user-facing front-end services and backend APIs.
  • Software refactoring and making sure services run smoothly.
  • Test, deploy and monitor applications, and react to problems.
  • Collaborate with product design and other stakeholders within the engineering team to provide a quality and iterative environment.
  • Advocate for product quality, security and performance.
  • Follow industry best practices for a high scale web environment and work with the team to provide suggestions for improvement.
  • Technical support for DataCite members and third parties, including supporting technical documentation.

Requirements

  • Proven experience as a Full stack Developer.
  • Proficiency with fundamental front-end technologies, HTML/CSS/Javascript
  • 3+ years of experience with server-side languages such as Ruby, Python, Java or .NET
  • Hands-on experience developing, deploying, and maintaining web applications, including system administration, error tracking, and support.
  • Familiarity with relational databases and search engines such as ElasticSearch.
  • Familiarity with DevOps practices, Infrastructure as Code using Terraform and cloud providers (AWS)
  • Excellent communication skills, and the flexibility that is needed for working in a small, distributed team.

Nice to haves:

  • Experience with Ruby and Rails.
  • Interest and/or experience with React and Next.js.
  • Strong interest in open science and data sharing.
  • Experience with performance investigation and optimisation.
  • Understanding of code review processes.
  • Good technical documentation skills.
  • Computer science education or equivalent experience.
  • Interest to learn and use other programming languages.
  • Familiarity with events driven architecture, distributed systems, serverless architecture and async processing

Metadata Specialist (remote)

Job Description

DataCite is looking for a Metadata Specialist to join the DataCite community engagement team. This is a fully remote position for an initial period of 1 year to support the initialization phase of the PID4NFDI project. This is a full time or part time position at 30-38.5 hours per week. In this phase, the Metadata Specialist will analyze which technical measures and metadata harmonization processes are needed to improve the ease-of-use and integration of scalable PID services within the NFDI.

About PID4NFDI

NFDI is Germany’s national research data infrastructure organization, which operates through various NFDI consortia to coordinate national infrastructure and strategies for research data management (RDM). The aim of the national research data infrastructure (NFDI) is to systematically manage scientific and research data, provide long-term data storage, backup and accessibility, and network the data both nationally and internationally. PID4NFDI is a new project which aims to develop an NFDI-wide PID strategy that captures the existing consortium- and community-focused solutions and requirements, and provides a blueprint for further development phases to roll out a portfolio of services that covers the various RDM use cases and the exceptional variety of requirements of the NFDI consortia.

Responsibilities and duties

  • Analyze how existing metadata in open scholarly infrastructure fits together—including DataCite DOI metadata, local repository metadata, and harvester metadata.
  • Identify, define, and refine metadata best practices.
  • Support the development of the DataCite Metadata Schema, in coordination with the DataCite team and the Metadata Working Group.
  • Coordinate with PID4NFDI project partners.

Requirements

  • University degree.
  • Familiarity with research infrastructure and the open science landscape.
  • Knowledge of the German research landscape and NFDI.
  • Experience with open scholarly metadata and metadata standards.
  • Data science skills.
  • Clear written, oral, and visual communication in English.
  • Ability to work with a distributed team across time zones.
  • Self-motivated to succeed and take initiative and seek continuous improvement.

Nice to haves:

  • Based in Germany and German language proficiency.
  • Experience with a relevant scripting language, such as Python or R, that can be used for metadata analysis.
  • Experience working with large datasets.

Product Manager (remote)

Job Description

DataCite is looking for an experienced, technical minded Product Manager to join our team to guide DataCite products and services that will empower the community to improve data citation practices. The list of services include APIs for harvesting our metadata and connections, APIs for storing and retrieving data citations and simple interfaces for showing matrix of aggregated data citations.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to guide products from inception through to launch focusing on our community needs and growth
  • Gather and prioritize product requirements, working closely with the internal teams and the community
  • Conduct user research and identify community needs
  • Create and maintain user stories, wireframes and product specifications
  • Collaborate with the development team to ensure that products meet quality standards
  • Conduct data analysis, and gather user feedback to make data-driven decisions and drive product improvements
  • Conduct product demos, present at conferences, and engage with community to gather feedback and insights
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to define and track key product metrics and OKRs
  • Stay updated with trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in product management.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience
  • 4 years of experience in product management
  • Ability to influence multiple stakeholders without direct authority
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex ideas to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Knowledge of UX/UI design principles
  • Experience in scholarly communications and/or information services industries is beneficial
